School Supplies - a logic problem
by Lauren Boehner and Tiffany Pease

It’s the beginning of July in the Boehlander household, when Mama Boehlander says, “It’s time to get our school supply shopping done.” Her four daughters had very different reactions to Mama’s suggestion. The oldest daughter groaned and said, “Uugh, Mom, it’s way too early. Don’t rush my summer vacation!” Her daughter who was about to start junior high said, “OK, whatever.” Her younger daughters were both thrilled with the idea. They said, “Yeah! I love school stuff!”
So, they all piled into Mama’s white SUV and headed off on their school supply shopping adventure. Mama Boehlander gave each of her daughters a basket and told them to choose a binder and pack of pencils while she got their other supplies. Determine the names of each sister, their grades (each is in a different grade), the type and design on their pencils, and the graphics on their binders.

  1. Kayla hates stripes, so she doesn’t have the striped binder, but the sister that’s in the 3rd grade loves polka dots.
  2. The sister who has the sparkly mechanical pencils is in a higher grade that the sister who has dogs on her binder but a lower grade than the one who has flowery mechanical pencils.
  3. Nikki loves to chew on her wooden pencils, so no one ever borrows them.
  4. Molly, who is in the 3rd grade, is a big fan of Curious George, but she doesn’t like sparkles.
  5. Kayla, the oldest sister, wouldn’t be caught dead with dogs on her binder.
  6. The sister who is going into junior high, 7th grade, has sparkly mechanical pencils because they are cool.
